Sudan is facing a colossal man-made catastrophe; MSF calls for an urgent, rapid scale-up of the humanitarian response

After one year of war, the aid provided to millions of people is a drop in the ocean due to political blockages created by the warring parties and lack of action from the United Nations and international humanitarian organisations.

“Sudan is one of the worst crises the world has seen for decades. There are extreme levels of suffering across the country, the needs are growing by the day, but the humanitarian response is deeply inadequate. We have responded to multiple mass casualty events and emergencies over the past year. We have performed life-saving surgical procedures, assisted women to give birth – including with emergency C-sections – and treated children in our paediatric wards and inpatient therapeutic feeding centres, trying to save their lives. In refugee camps and locations hosting displaced people, we have improved water and sanitation conditions, run mobile clinics and vaccinated children. But in many of the areas where we work, we are the sole humanitarian organisation there. Before the start of the war, there were dozens of international organisations responding across the country. Now, there are almost none. For a crisis of this scale, this is unfathomable, unacceptable and it cannot be allowed to continue.

  UKRAINE: Pokrovsk, Donetsk Region MSF Condemns Missile Attack that Destroyed its Office in Donetsk Region

The international medical organisation Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) strongly condemns the missile attack on its office in Pokrovsk, Donetsk region, Ukraine, on April 5th, at approximately 3:15 am. The building was destroyed completely and five people were injured, including MSF’s security staff.  As a result, MSF has suspended its medical humanitarian activities in the Donetsk region temporarily, except supporting emergency care and ambulance referral services. “This act of violence against a humanitarian organisation cannot be brushed off as just another casualty of war,” says Vincenzo Porpiglia, emergency coordinator for MSF in Ukraine. “Attacks on any facility where humanitarian staff work not only jeopardize the safety of our staff but also hinder the provision of lifesaving care to those in need.”

Geneva/Brussels, 18 March 2024 – As the world marks ten years since the deadliest Ebola virus disease outbreak that killed more than 11,000 people in West Africa, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is disappointed that while two approved Ebola treatments now exist, they are not readily available via an emergency stockpile for use in places where they would likely be needed in a future outbreak.
