MSF Flashquote following the deaths of four people trying to cross the Channel

Jacob Burns, UK Migration Operations Manager for Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF), said:

"The deaths of four people - including two children - trying to cross the Channel over the last 24 hours are again a reminder of the brutal reality of cutting off safe routes for people trying to get to this country. If people desperate for a chance to live in safety do not have a way to obtain that protection legally, then all it does is push them into the arms of the smugglers and exposes them to the risk of death. Instead of yet more unworkable and unethical deterrent policies, which are only likely to cause more harm and more loss of life, we need to see the government work seriously on providing real and safe options for people to seek asylum in this country."
