MSF Mozambique: attacks on health facilities must stop
02 Sept 2026 - During an attack on the village of Quelimane, in Mocímboa da Praia district, Cabo Delgado province, on Monday 21st September, the local health centre supported by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) was looted, and essential medicines and medical supplies were stolen.
"Attacks on and looting of health facilities, as well as the theft of medicines and medical equipment, have devastating consequences for communities already facing extreme vulnerability because of conflict and displacements. People living with chronic illnesses such as HIV/TB, hypertension, or diabetes see their treatment interrupted, putting their lives at risk. Health care must remain accessible to all, including those living in areas affected by conflict or insecurity,” said Pooja Iyer, MSF Country Coordinator in Mozambique.
MSF condemns any act of violence affecting healthcare services. Patients, caregivers and healthcare workers must be respected at all times.
MSF has been present in Cabo Delgado since 2019, providing impartial medical and humanitarian assistance to people displaced by conflict, host communities, and people affected by emergencies linked to extreme weather events. Since launching medical activities in Mocímboa da Praia in 2022, MSF has continued to expand access to essential healthcare services. In the district alone, between January and June 2026, MSF teams conducted over 57,000 outpatient consultations, treated 12,000 patients with respiratory infections, and provided follow-up care to 132 people diagnosed with HIV.
