MSF Mozambique launches emergency response in Cabo Delgado as displacements soar

04 August 2025 Flash quote: Ana Isabel Rua Jaramillo, Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) Medical coordinator in Mozambique.

“Mozambique’s northern province of Cabo Delgado is witnessing the major wave of internal displacement in months following attacks by non-state armed groups in the south of Chiure district on the night of 23 July. According to official data, more than 26,000 people were displaced. Entire families with little children, pregnant women, elderly people with chronic conditions, had to walk in fear and they are now taking refuge in makeshift camps in extremely precarious conditions in Chiure town.

MSF medical teams are particularly concerned about the spread of respiratory, skin, and waterborne diseases, common in settings where shelter is inadequate and access to clean water is limited. After assessing the situation, as of 31 July we have launched an emergency response focusing on two camps in the area. Our teams will work alongside the Ministry of Health to provide primary healthcare, mental health support, and carry out infrastructure improvements, and water and sanitation activities.

This escalation in a conflict that is nearing eight years of duration highlights the continued volatility of the region and severely compromises the continuity of care for thousands. Once again, MSF calls on armed actors in Cabo Delgado to stop attacks on healthcare and humanitarian workers, and to respect the medical mission, and urges a coordinated humanitarian response to meet the growing needs of displaced communities.”
