MSF Statement on Government’s decision to expand the use of military barracks for people seeking asylum
Jacob Burns, UK Migration Operations Manager for Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF), said:
"The Government’s decision to expand the use of military barracks for people seeking asylum in a desperate attempt to close hotels is a pointlessly cruel and costly move that will do nothing to deter those seeking safety in the UK.
Our medical teams have seen first-hand the devastating impact of this approach at RAF Wethersfield in Essex — where prison-like conditions, barbed wire, and constant surveillance caused widespread and serious psychological distress. Over 60% of our patients there experienced severe mental distress and nearly a third reported suicidal thoughts.
Both hotels and military sites are dangerous policy approaches and totally unsuitable for housing people seeking asylum. The Government must urgently abandon this inhumane plan and prioritise safe, sustainable and cost-effective alternatives that uphold dignity, wellbeing, and social cohesion — supporting both people seeking protection and the communities in which they live."
