MSF statement on Israel's decision to ban UNRWA from East Jerusalem

Israel's decision to ban UNRWA from East Jerusalem, which is set to be implemented today, will severely impact its activities in West Bank and Gaza and will be devastating for Palestinians and their access to healthcare.

“Restricting an UN organization with a mandate by the General Assembly sets a dangerous precedent threatening the delivery of impartial humanitarian aid and is part of a long-running campaign against UNRWA,” says Claire Nicolet, MSF deputy head of emergencies.

No other organization can replace UNRWA’s health provision in Gaza and the West Bank. This will cut children from life-saving vaccinations, pregnant women will have less access to maternal care, and those with chronic illnesses will suffer from preventable complications.

In 2024, UNRWA provided over 6 million medical consultations across the Gaza Strip, and over 776,000 consultations in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. Its impact is not only huge for health provision but serves as lifeline for people in the Occupied Palestinian Territories
