MSF: Statement on UK government's decision to cut Official Development Assistance

25 February 2025 - Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has issued a statement on the UK government's decision to cut Official Development Assistance.

Dr Natalie Roberts, Executive Director of MSF UK said: "The announcement to reduce Official Development Assistance (ODA) to a mere 0.3% is disgraceful. It will have a catastrophic impact on the lives and needs of millions of people living in humanitarian crises. In recent years, the scale and complexity of humanitarian crises have escalated dramatically, particularly in regions such as Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Gaza. The gap between needs and an effective and properly funded humanitarian response is widening at an alarming rate.

At this critical juncture, the UK has a unique opportunity to lead by example. Instead of retreating from its responsibilities, immediate action is required to significantly increase, safeguard, and deploy essential medical and humanitarian aid. This is crucial to address the pressing needs of the world's most vulnerable people.

While MSF does not receive UK Government funding, we are deeply concerned about the far-reaching impact of repeated and sustained aid reductions. Countries affected by conflict, natural disasters, and disease outbreaks where we operate will suffer immensely.

MSF UK calls on the UK Government to reverse these cuts and commit to a robust and effective aid strategy that prioritises the health and well-being of those in dire need."
