MSF update on situation in Goma, eastern DR Congo
05 February 2025: In recent days, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) teams in Goma, North Kivu, the Democratic Republic of Congo, have managed to expand their medical and humanitarian support for the city's population and at several displacement sites. The needs are huge and urgent.
In Goma, where most hospitals are overwhelmed, MSF continues its support for the injured at Kyeshero and Virunga hospitals. MSF also started to collect blood packs last Saturday to supply other hospitals in desperate need.
At Virunga Hospital we set up a 49-bed extension, and reinforced surgical, hygiene and sterilisation support while providing food, fuel and water. Three operating rooms are running.
With the reduction in armed violence around Goma, MSF resumed support in multiple displacement sites, providing water, food, healthcare, and fuel for the water pumps. We refilled several health facilities and relaunched dedicated clinics for the provision of care for survivors of sexual violence.
One of our concerns in Goma city as well as the displacement sites is the reported increase in cholera cases. Access to water has been cut for days, corpses have been lying in the streets and water-borne diseases such as cholera are a real threat. Some of our cholera treatment centres are full and have been expanded.
