Statement by Sonia Balleron, Head of Mission of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in Greece, in response to the shipwreck off Samos

23 September, 2024:

We are shocked and outraged by the latest tragedy off the coast of Samos island in Greece, where lives have been lost and several people remain missing, according to local news reports. These deaths are the tragic consequence of inhumane migration policies. MSF teams have provided emergency medical and psychological assistance to five survivors, including a pregnant woman. Reports indicate that 33 people were on board the vessel, with four confirmed dead and the rest still missing. Our teams continue to monitor the situation and stand ready to extend emergency medical aid to those still missing. Our thoughts and deepest compassion go out to the families of the deceased.”
